MadArt welcomed Seattle-based artist Katie Miller to the studio in the summer of 2018. Miller’s immersive, site-specific installation of sculptural forms enveloped visitors in light and shadow. These large-scale pieces examined the developing urban landscape and its impact on our perception of place by utilizing lines and angles familiar to architectural frameworks. Comprised of four main sculptural components, The Presence of Absence expanded the boundaries of Miller’s previous bodies of work to include intimate two- and three-dimensional environments animated with natural and applied light.
Miller transformed the space by responding directly to MadArt’s physical structure and to shifting summer light conditions during her two-month Open Studio period. As always, visitors were welcomed to come inside and engage with the artist as she worked, exploring the processes of creation and installation firsthand.
