MadArt was founded in 2009 to produce its inaugural exhibition, The Window Art Project. This collection of temporary art installations enlivened retail storefronts in Seattle’s Madison Park neighborhood, from which MadArt’s name originates. This project was made possible by 18 merchants who offered their valuable window space to 19 local emerging artists. Their resulting artworks highlighted a range of mediums, from painting and ceramics to woodworking and mixed-media installations. Each piece was site-specific and easily seen from the sidewalk, giving visitors an unexpected viewing experience. MadArt’s goals for this project were to support and challenge local artists to create new works in specific contexts, and to provide opportunities for passersby to discover contemporary artwork in everyday places.
